Based on the fundamental disciplines of athletics such as running, throwing and long jump, a number of new solutions and possibilities have been created at the athletics facility at University of Southern Denmark in Odense with different kinds of running surfaces, a centrifugal track, obstacles, parcour elements, equipment for outdoor strength training and artificial hills placed in the middle of the athletics facility. Several places, the classical red running tracks extend beyond the athletics facility and grab hold of the surroundings in a way that awaken the curiosity of many people to have a look at the area.
Maria Keinicke and Flemming Overgaard, the architects from Keingart, says about the experimental athletics facility at SDU in Odense: “The facility is a modernisation of a traditional athletics facility where we have added a hilly landscape with a wide range of alternative possibilities for running, long jump and throwing. The new elements have created a more playful and inviting approach to athletics and movement so that the facility now has far more users from many different user groups.”
