Streetmekka in Copenhagen

It may seem to be a bit of a paradox to put a roof over street culture that lives and breathe on urban streets and squares. But that is exactly the purpose of StreetMecca that pulls street activities indoors in winter.

It may seem to be a bit of a paradox to put a roof over street culture that lives and breathe on urban streets and squares. But that is exactly the purpose of StreetMecca that pulls street activities indoors in winter.

Danish weather does not really lend itself to staying outside during winter. Therefore, the association GAME with support from the Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities and the municipality of Copenhagen have established Streetmekka as a multicultural youth centre for the physical and musical street culture of the capital.

The Streetmekka is set up in two disused depot halls of a total of 1,940 m² at Enghavevej in the southwest part of Copenhagen. The most prominent room is the big hall of 890 m². Street basket governs the hall expression with six baskets and possibilities for playing four street basket games at a time – or a match in accordance with the indoor rules with the length of the court. In a smaller hall next door that also was given new asphalt surfacing you can play football and do parcour on specially designed mobile frame structure.

At the back of the building with a view of Vestre Prison, a large dance hall with parquet flooring and seats is hiding. On the first floor, you will find a DJ school and a street art gallery with displayed works of graffiti. Here, there is also a lounge with table foosball and a view of the large hall as well as the three floors with administration offices for Streetmekka and GAM3 that have gotten a new, permanent office in the building.

The conversion has succeeded in creating rooms that are light and accessible while at the same time maintaining the direct, raw attitude and energy of street culture. The gates to Streetmekka can be opened and that way create an incomparable connection between indoor and outdoor areas.

When open, the gates also work as a five meter wide covering for a part of the outdoor area. The windows of the DJ school on the first floor also work as small gates that can be opened. This provides the school with the option that the DJs can stay inside and have direct contact with the audience in the yard when they play at outdoor activities in the summer.
