Streetmekka in Viborg

The first example of how culture and arts of the street scene can co-exist with sports and movement in the same facility is being built in Viborg.

The first example of how culture and arts of the street scene can co-exist with sports and movement in the same facility is being built in Viborg.

Physical activity and “street art” are closely related in street culture but the facilities directed at street culture have often been purely focused on movement. This is about to change in the new Viborg Streetmekka.

The realisation of GAME Streetmekka Viborg is a collaboration between Realdania, the TrygFonden, the Nordea-fonden, the Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities, the street sports organisation GAME and the municipality of Viborg.

The Streetmekka in Viborg is an exciting solution to converting a former Vestas building into a flexible space with room for everyone who loves “street”. The industrial building will get a new lease on life and serve as a great example of how industrial architecture can be put into action in a whole new way.

The Streetmekka in Viborg provides an especially great setting for development and exposure of street art in many ways of expression on the front of the building and inside the building; for example in the form of light art and animation that both are very vibrant and exciting circles in Viborg. It has a high priority to build bridges between movement and culture.

The winning project merges culture and sports so Streetmekka in Viborg becomes the first facility of the country that can create the optimum conditions for a number of various practioners of street art. The many new possibilities will also be able to attract all new user groups for street culture. The Streetmekka in Viborg will thus become the first place in Denmark where focus is really on creating a world-class street art location.
