The cultural center 'Nicolai for Children' in Kolding

The rebuilding of Sct. Nicolai school from the 19th century has given Kolding several cultural offerings. The idea sprung out of The Danish Foundations for Culture and Sports Facilities project ’Arkitektur i Børnehøjde/Children’s architecture’, where children are not just little adults’ in the adult world of architecture, but a place where the architecture provides a doorway to a more complex world of learning, culture and nature.

Today the 6.000m2 large building contains the house of arts and crafts, the house of literature, the house of music, the house of movies – and finally a children’s cultural center which The Danish Foundation for Culture and Sports Facilities helped fund and developed in collaboration with the municipality of Kolding and Dorte Mandrup Architects.

In the 1.300m2 children’s cultural center different rooms with different sensory experiences, possibility of contemplation, physical challenges, workshops and child culture have been made. On the top floor the children can lie on floor of glass and look down on activities beneath them.

Children and their parents, day-cares or schools can use the house on their own or take part in the activities the staff at the house makes.
